John "Jack" Henry Hoppe

November 22, 1926 - February 11, 2017

(Veteran) John “Jack” Henry Hoppe, 90, of Butternut, WI, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, February 11, 2017.  He was born November 22, 1926, in Park Falls, WI, to Ervin and Clara (Peterson) Hoppe. Upon graduation from Park Falls High School in 1944, Jack was drafted into the US Army, serving in the Philippines and in the Occupation Forces in Japan as a Technical Sergeant.  Following his honorable discharge in 1946, he returned to Park Falls.  He ran a milk delivery route, while working with and learning meat cutting skills from his father, owner of Hoppe’s Market in Butternut.  In 1950, Jack graduated from the National School of Meat Cutting in Toledo, OH, under the GI bill. In 1953, he married Corinne “Mickey” Stein of Fifield, WI, and the couple made their home in Butternut, where both worked at Hoppe’s Market and raised their family.  Jack and Mickey purchased the store from his parents in 1975, which they owned and operated until their retirement in 2000.  Hoppe’s Market provided custom butchering and meat cutting services, deer processing, smokehouse meats and groceries to the Butternut area for a total of 58 years. During his life, Jack was a member of the Butternut Volunteer Fire Dept, the American Legion Post 272 and the Knights of Columbus.  His hobbies included reading, gardening, playing cribbage, and watching the Packers and Brewers.  Fishing trips to the Boundary Waters with sons and grandsons were an annual tradition for Jack until age 86.  After retiring, he enjoyed spending time with his wife and family and weekly breakfasts with a group of close friends known as the ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out). For as long as he was able, Jack enjoyed daily walks or bike rides and waltzing with his wife.  His dedication to staying active and healthy was inspiring.  He will be remembered for his kindness and his patience. He is survived by his wife of over 63 years, Mickey, eight children, David (Lois) Hoppe, Barbara (Bob) Gierman, Mary (Jim) Killinger, Jane (Jeff) Martin, Daniel (Diane) Hoppe, Jim (Denise) Hoppe, Sara (Eddie) Peterson, Susan (Eric) Miller, twelve grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, a brother, Bill (Jane) Hoppe, a sister-in-law, Betty Murnik, and a brother-in-law, Manny (Roz) Stein.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Carol Hoppe. Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, February 17, at 11:00 am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Butternut, WI.  Fr. Shaji Pazhukkathara and Deacon Bob Schienebeck will co-officiate. Visitation will be on Friday, February 17, at the church from 9:30 am until the Mass begins. Burial will be held at a later date. The Novitzke Funeral Home is assisting the family.
