George T. Varelia

April 30, 1923 - March 3, 2015

(Veteran) George T. Varelia age 91 of Park Falls, died on March 3, 2015 at Park Manor Nursing home in Park Falls. He was born on April 20. 1923 in Glidden. The son of George and Catherine (Sraje) Varelia. After the death of his mother he was taken to the orphans home in Superior and later to Phillips where he spent his younger years farming in the Price County area. Later George served in the Army as a field artillery officer and later worked in the woods for most of his life logging and cutting timber for Rich Morrison and others. He also did some caretaker work for some properties around the Bass Lake area. George started working for the US Forest Service in the late 70's into the 1980's in Glidden where he later retired. George also volunteered for St. Anthony's Catholic Church and was a companion of the Precious Blood Society for many years. He enjoyed Berry picking and always knew where the best patches were, and knew where to drop them off to make pies, jams, and jellies. He also enjoyed fishing and caught many muskies; but his favorite fish were crappies and bluegills. Many of his friends enjoyed many fish fries thanks to Georges skills and luck. George especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He is survived by his lifelong friend and guardian, MaryLou Cuddeback and her son Lee of Park Falls. His nephew and godson Tom “Diz” Dezotell of Clam Lake and Larry Dezotell of Park Falls and niece Mary (Tommy Schmidt) Dezotell of Park Falls. And many other relatives and life long friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, (2)brothers: John and Joe Varelia. (1)sister: Helen Dezotell. Funeral Services will be on Saturday March 7, 2015 at 11:00 am from St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Park Falls Fr. Shaji Pazhukkathara will officiate. Visitation will be on Saturday March 7, 2015 at 10:00 am until the hour of service at the church. Burial will be at Most Precious Blood Cemetery at a later date.
