Ervin H. Engel

Ervin H. Engel age 97, of Butternut, passed away peacefully on November 10th, 2023 with his daughter by his side. He was born on April 7th, 1926 in Butternut, the son of Henry and Anna (Christian) Engel. Ervin served in the U.S. Army for two years as MP (military police) at the end of the war (1945-1947) and received the Army of Occupation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. When he returned home, he met and married the love of his life, Alice Kelnhofer on August 6th, 1949. Together they raised their six children on their farm. Ervin, a jack-of-all-trades, did various types of hands-on work. He worked in the woods as a lumberjack and worked a majority of his career at the Paper Mill for over 25 years. He enjoyed his hobby farm and doing carpentry; even building his own home. He enjoyed farming, wood carving, woodworking, hunting trips with his sons, fishing with Alice, playing cards, storytelling, going out to eat with his family, and the great outdoors. Ervin was a family-oriented yet private man who was a strong, hard worker and would do anything to help his family. Ervin enjoyed polka dancing and traveling with his wife. Together they explored Texas, Utah, Alaska, Germany and won a trip to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife of almost 74 years Alice Engel of Butternut, and was survived by their (6) children; Perry (Sherry) Engel of Plover, WI., Doug Engel of Boerne, TX., Dawn Engel of Park Falls, Craig (Brenda) Engel of Boerne, TX., Cindy Engel of Southlake, TX., Scott (Sharon) Engel of Saratoga Springs, UT., (14) grandchildren; Tara, Kristi, Todd, Ben, Brooke, Blair, Alex, Luke, Conner, Isabella, Alexia, Sophia, Rachel, Jeremiah, (4) great-grandchildren; Taylor, Rylee, Cylas and Sophie, his brother Donald (Roberta) Engel of Fort Atkinson, and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, (5) sisters; Ruthie Richter, Ella Pohle, Louise Hofferle, Viola Wenninger, Laura Thimm, (1) Brother, Walter Engel, and many brothers-in-law and (1) sister-in-law.
